...a lesson in fidelity, loyalty and tragedy...
A mallard couple slowly waddled
along the median, pecking at this
or that absent mindedly.
Briefly, like a familiar couple they
walked closely together seemingly
enjoying each other’s company.
The drabness of the female melded
with the dark road surface as she
continued to peck at the invisible.
Occasionally she glanced up at her mate.
The black car crushed her body in an instant.
The male casually looked up, as if curious,
and waddled, absently glancing
now and again at the still, crushed body
of his mate. Hesitating, he crossed the
road to peck at the opposite median.
He looked once more at the still body
and moved on to the green grass
and there remained for the next three days.
