Unequivocal Hibernation (poem)

Unequivocal Hibernation

Unlike other conifers

The tamaracks were turning

A brilliant yellow,

As if they didn’t know any better

Their rogue behaviour responding as

Temperatures were dropping

The boreal forests were hibernating

The rot-resistant trunks braced for

Another season of sub-zero temperatures

While in the cities, people,

Most of us, oblivious to nature,

In denial of the impact we have

Went about our lives unaware of the

Forces we were unleashing through

Our individual and institutional denial

Of what appears obvious to a squirrel

facing hibernation.
