Youthful Misdirection

 Youthful Misdirection

Entered Rome in a converted hearse,
There to see the Spanish Steps
And all the rest.
Just nineteen full of hope
Like my father before me I had
Been called to wander,
The horizon always called
Even down by the water
Where I felt I could still walk upon it
drink the wine, everything was possible.
Didn’t really know the shape I was in
until
In Paris I lay on the grass
Basking in the sunshine
Beneath the Eiffel Tower,
Until the moment a Parisian
Kicked me …get off the grass.
Down by the River Seine
opening my heart to the
Infinite possibilities.
While in London, eating fish and chips
On a newspaper wrap, wandering
For days through meandering streets
stayed in a hostel
Before catching the ferry for Oostende
Sleeping on the beach,
next
Hitching a ride to Munich
With friends just met.
Spontaneous travel, no thought
For the future,
Youthful misdirection,
Gone by morning
