Kuwait: Slave Labour

Perpetual Motion

Picking the litter each day
An old man younger than me
With a
Bright yellow construction jump suit,
One old shovel,
One bent and worn rake
Each day and
Every Liberation Day,
National day
After crazy celebration
A million spray cans and their
Red lids litter the streets
This old man serves to
Pick the urban flotsam
Discarded in celebration  without care
This man in the yellow jump suit
Who  no one sees
The one with the straggly white beard
The wrinkled dark skin
An invisible man
Graciously accepts a quarter dinar
From one driver who cares.

My name is Dwight Storring, I'm artist in residence at the City of Kitchener for 2014 (http://www.kitchener.ca/en/livinginkitchener/ArtistInResidence.asp). I've been looking at the plaque at City Café for a number of years now and wondering about the story behind it. I would love to get in touch to explore the potential of using your story in my residency project.
Please email me at dwight@storring.net
My apologies for posting this on your blog, but it seemed to be the only way to get in touch.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
